I have bought Phyllostachys Aurea Golden Bamboo and Nigra( Black).Advice varies. some saying they are clump forming others saying the dreaded words Can be invasive.

How bad are they if we put them in the ground. How fast do they grow? I met someone today that said they are terrible forever having to dig up sharp roots.

I want advice from people who have grown them. I dont mind as long as they are no too much trouble. Do they need to be in a container in the ground restricting growth or not. If I decide to put them in a big tub .Do I submerge it in the ground. Will the ryzomes grow over the top of the pot. Will Masonary bags surrounding the wall behind stop the foundations being affected. Please let me know how much of a burden is Bamboo.

Jean,Phyllostachys Aurea Golden Bamboo is industrial strength bamboo it's quite a brute once established difficult to remove, the phyllostachys nigra is easier to control but I bought a small variety once and still found it invasive,if I was to get another I would grow it in a container if you sink the container the roots will find the drainage hole.

I have both, and both grow very quickly each yr the new shoots get taller and taller. I t took 3yrs before the nigra decided to pop up about 4ft away into next doors garden but they can't see it cos its hidden by sheds! The golden one has stayed in a clump. [IMG]

Any idea what this one is TO? I was given it about 2 years ago and was told it grows pretty tall. What that means I don't know. It's been about 1 metre high since I got it.

The bamboo in the photo is the same one as I have. I have had it for about 10 years and never grows higher than a couple of feet but my oh my, how it can spread. I dug it up to put in a container and chucked other bits away. It was very invasive.
I have no idea of the name of it.
I have other bamboos which are the opposite, growing tall and not wide so just perfect. The black bamboo has taken a couple of years to get established and I planted it when it was not even showing above the compost but now it is growing well and is now about 4 feet.

Are you sure you have Phyllostachys, because aurea will grow to 15ft and nigra will grow to 10-20ft quite quickly. I think you are both more likely to have Arundinarias.

Thanks. I am` putting them in tomorrow in larger containers. I went to a small park near me and considering Ive been visiting for over 30 years ,saw for the 1st time its Oriental garden is full ofbamboo that has gone wild. I dont want that.! I am going to leave the Nigra alone in the ground but dig up the small one like the photo and replant in a tub.

I planted this one last year - Phyllostachys Aureo 'Spectabilis'& picked it for its non-invasive habits. Must admit, no probs so far & it's growing vertically as opposed to horizontally but not at the rate I'd hoped!

I had the rampant Phillostachys in a plastic tub and it after a couple of years, it was so compacted, I had to break the tub to get the damn stuff out. I then divided it into many clumps, potted them up and gave them away. I have a couple of small pots only now. It really does go mad. Comes up anywhere and everywhere once established.
