I'm putting this in this section because I think everyone looks here, and PMing everyone seperately
    would take a long time.

There are several people waiting for either seed (mainly evening primrose) or seedlings (mainly cycads) and I told most that I would be posting next Monday. Unfortunately it has just come to my attention that Royal Mail has yet another strike next week, which will cause chaos for some time. It doesn't matter for the seed very much but I don't want the seedlings to be in the post for any longer than necessary. Therefore they will not be posted until a week on Monday, and in view of disruptions anyone expecting seed shouldn't panic. It will get to you eventually, courtesy of Royal Mail. Sorry about this but you can see it is beyond my control.

I so hope this strike does not go on for too long for yourself S with the seedlings and seeds you have ready to post .

And for everyone this affects so many walks of life and a lot of buisness will loose out on this.

And I am sure there are a lot of people that are looking for jobs who would jump at the chance.

Maybe someone else should start up a company to deliver mail as Royal Mail have the monoply.

There are other companies that deliver mail, such as TNT, but it still goes through the RM system.
My father-in-law (Warrington) and brother-in-law (Runcorn)are both Posties are under so much stress at the moment, my father-in-law is considering leaving after 20 years.
I know it causes a lot of disruption, I am a company director, so it affects me directly, but I think the Posties are entitled to their protest.

    Hi all,

Our postie lives down the lane, he has told me all about the extra duties that have been put on them and although it is inconveneint to not receive the post when these strikes occur, i do agree with him about the amount of stress they are under. Also it's always the poor postie who gets it in the neck from people waiting for their post rather than RM.

So to end my ramble, i too think they are entitles to their protest. Their workload is unbeleivable.

AAAARGH. In view of the latest 'lack of' development in the PO dispute I will be posting seed on Monday. Was hoping to get away with one visit to the post office (which is one down from the dentist to me - it is always half an hour's queuing). I am told by my people friendly post man that another strike starts on tuesday. So I daren't really risk seedlings. But worry not peeps that are waiting for them. (Actually do worry because unless I can get them out soon they are possibly going to die). I will send as soon as I think they have half a chance of getting there alive.

Sorry if this is off the topic Sarra but you seem to have sorted your problem.

I can see many different sides to the dispute so find it difficult to support or argue against the strike.

Our postie is brilliant and does a difficult job with not particularly good pay. He deserves better conditions and pay.

From a personal point of view it is frustrating not to be able to receive expected mail. I've been organising an event and entry forms come in (or not) by mail. We are now having to arrange that for future years the entries will be by email - at a loss to Royal Mail. Some friends of ours didn't receive their flight tickets for their holiday because of the strike and had a very frantic few hours trying to arrange that they could pick duplicates up at the airport.

I used to own a small mail order company and have had to lay off staff (only had three) during disputes. It was either that or close the business. The staff were, understandably, not very happy with the strikes.

I also used to be on the local Post Office Advisory Committee so saw many other aspects of problems that arose.

The unpalatable answer is to pay more for postage.

Don't get me started on the projected Post Office closures. [IMG] :D

I agree Shiney. It's difficult to decide whether top management or the union is wrong, but, like you, I have great sympathy for the posties, and like you I just don't want to talk about the closures.

I did actually take the bull by the horns on Monday and posted the seedlings as well as seeds. Nobody has acknowledged receipt yet so possibly I did the wrong thing. The seedlings are all wrapped in sphagnum moss so if the moisture doesn't disintegrate the packing, they should be OK for 4 or 5 days, but I am now starting to become concerned.

I bought a new magnolia last week-end from a firm that is normally very quick, but no sign as yet. :(

Ah well, I'll just have to wait and see.

I'm waiting to post a parcel to my son at liverpool uni, and I daren't until it all settles down. Also Hubbie is paid by cheque which have to be sent to Bootle so fingers crossed they get there or it's dry bread for tea. Going off on a tangent: does any one know why in the days before computers it only took 3 working days for cheques to clear and it now takes 5?

Yes Celia. In theory cheques can clear by computer in 2 minutes. It is all done instantaneously rather like posting a reply on here.

But the banks have to make a profit. If they 'grab' the money for 3 days and there are millions of pounds in transactions they can use that money for their own purposes. And when they have to pay it out there is no problem because somebody else has paid in by then. By increasing their clearing time to 5 working days they can actually hang on to all the cash for not 5 but 7 days (they still charge interest on a weekend).

They thus double their profit on these amounts.

Not computers to blame I'm afraid. Just greedy banks.
