Phyllostachys Nigra, can you plant it directly into the ground without using a barrier, or should one protect against it rooting all over the place?

Phyllostachys nigra is the only bamboo thats supposed to be non invasive so it should be easy to control

Hi GARDENANGEL, yes as Walnut says its ok. I have it planted straight into the ground. Although because it is planted with more vigorous bamboos, it is in a raised bed with bricks in front and fencing boards behind. It does grow outwards but as far as I know does this as a clump rather than wandering. Root barriers are a good idea if you want to keep bamboos specifically in between other plants at a certain size, but personally I never bothered with specific rhizome barriers. I am satisfied to provide general restrictions like a raised bed, and I am happy for it to spread within as I like the informal jungle planting style. If it gets to big just dig round it and remove the excess back to the size you want. Mine is about 6 feet+ and in the two years its been in it hasn't done a great deal. Where as the other bamboos I have listed above have more than doubled already

    Hope this helps.

I bought this book and it really is the business if you are interested in bamboos.
