When to spread compost on borders?

Hi all

Am I right in thinking it's good to spread our home made compost over the borders now?

Or have I dreamt it?!!

I'd be more inclined to do it at the end of winter to minimise nutrient losses from winter rains. Most plants will appreciate it more in springtime.

Others may feel differently but I'd keep it in a (covered) heap for 5 months more.
