reseeding grass and levelling lawn

hi guys

ive applied some mosskiller weed and feed stuff recently and the moss is going black, i will rake that off next weekend

i have a few patches, and will have a few more when the moss is raked, that are a bit sparse of grass

1. how do i add seed to an already grassy area without digging it up and starting again

2. i have a few low spots, how can i level my lawn out a bit?

 

Hi warped. Probably the best way to cope with bare patches is to give the patch a good rake and re-seed, watering it well. You could scatter a little compost mixed with sand over the patches at first if you like.

With low spots, remove a piece of grass turf from the dip, then add soil to the right level, then replace the turf and water well.

when seeding do i just need to scatter the seed on top or do i need to put some soil over the seed to kinda bury them?

 

Just lightly rake them in.

Just a thought.... If your soil is compacted, you might want to make some holes with your fork first, and brush in some sand....... if the reason for your moss is lack of drainage, then that will help stop you getting more of it.

so would it be good to make holes throughout the lawn generally, i heard that in order to do it properly you need to remove the soil, ie using a hollow aerating device thingy
ill give it a try anyhow before i put the grass seeds down

what is the significance of the sand?

 

Sand helps to lighten the compacted soil, aids drainage and allows the grass to establish quickly.

The hollow tined thing always clogs up, I find - I jsut use a border fork, dig in, wiggle back and forwards, and pull out. Far less frustrating.

 

I use exactly the same technique Dendy - boring job, but well worth the effort, even in my weed patch.
