I have a very old thyme in one of the window boxes that my mum gave me. It's pretty scraggy and woody, is is something I can prune back? If so, when do I prune? How much? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm very new to all this...

Never had much success with cutting back thymes. Certainly they do not seem to shoot from old wood, though there is nothing in the books about it. I would be inclines to peg down the branches and take them off when they are rooted to create new plants. Cuttings are also fairly easy.

Hi GM .After about 3 or 4 years .What I do with my Thyme Is I take root cuttings,I dig the whole plant up,Clear as much soil away from the roots as possible, and then just gently tear the plant into 3 or 4 pieces
Each new piece should have some foliage and root
,If planted in April you should be ready by July.
    Hope this helps.Good luck. [IMG]

Hi woo, I think that is what I need to do with our thyme. They always seem to go off after several years, no matter what sort I've tried. Thanks for the tip.
