May be i'm very wrong and conifers always look like this but has anybody else noticed how so many of them have dead brown branches at the moment? If thay are always like this how do you make them look nice again and if not what is the problem?

Yes I had noticed. We have had an odd year weather wise, and I think conifers, like a lorra trees, especially in hedges have suffered in the long dry periods - have seen a lot of dead ones - not much you can do except replace.
A lot of the deciduous trees have been showing the signs of drought, with leaves browning and turning autumnal colours as early as July - but they will recover.

I've seen a few conifer hedges with brown patches now you mention it becca. Dont know whats causing it, I haven't got any myself anymore, so havn't really taken much notice till you mentioned it.
Is it a problem you have? I know that once a conifer goes brown it can take a while for the dead patch to grow over.

My dad lives in derbyshire and gets plent of rain but he's had a couple of sky rockets die on him this year, the one in the garden of my new hous is huge but just doesnt look well, my neighbour from my old house had a couple in his from garden and they look decidedly dead to me and i know my boyfriend who is a professional gardener has had to dig up and replace a few at clients homes and also at his own house and the one outside my window at work looks a bit iffy as well. Then i started noticing them around other places. I just wondered if it was some disease or normal?

I've noticed conifers turning their toes up in my neighbourhood - put it down the weather this year, cos up until recently there's been some long dry spells.

Now I am beginning to wonder if there is another problem

yhere is a disease that is killing off leylandii it leaves large brown patches on other conifers it is drought but they do get bad infestations of aphid you do not really notice till leaf drop though you do get a black soot which is a giveaway if they are mature trees there is not a lot you can do if young spray for aphid water well give a light prune good luck :D :D
