    Hi everyone,

I've just moved into a new house and I have a 10m x 14m back garden(??) although to call it a garden is probably stretching it a bit!! so I'll probably be oposting quite often on this forum in the next few months. Anyway my 1st task is to get some decent topsoil so how much topsoil will I require and can anyone recommend a topsoil supplier in the Lanarkshire/Central Scotland area?

    Thanks,

    Andy

Cannot help with suppliers, but quantity is easier. 10m mulltiplied by 14m multiplied by the depth of soil in metres. A cubic metre is reckoned to be 1 ton.
Before yo buy any soil you need to be able to SEE what you are getting to check on its quality.

Just to echo what Palustris has said re. quality of topsoil. Years ago my dad had a lorry load of 'topsoil'. It was the scrapings off the top of a gravel pit. Stones with dirt on would have been a better desription.

Hope you realise that to cover the whole of that area with about 6 inches of soil will require somewhere in the region of 25 tons!

I know. That is one big pile of dirt especially when it will have to be wheelbarrowed round to the back of the house. I'll maybe ask to get it delivered in 2 or 3 smaller loads

    Hi,
I have just overhauled my garden and my question is do you really need top soil? What is on the area at the moment? We had an uneven lawn and old plants, but once we took out the old plants and removed the lawn and rotivated it all over the soil quality was fine, so saved us about £160 for top soil. You may need it but might be worth checking first? You can take a small box of soil to your garden centre who will check it for you. Worth a thought?

    Hi LCH,

Its mostly a mixture of clay, loam and general building debris. I've been out the past couple of nights picking up the larger stones etc. The houses on either side of us had their back garden turfed by the builder but I don't know how much prep. was done so I hate to think what's lurking under their nice green grass
