hi, I really need some help and advice, i am new to gardening and have decided that since ive been living in my own home for 2 years its about time i started on the garden. I am not very atteneive so it needs to be low maintenance, i also have a baby so it needs to be child friendly! But i also want it to look really pretty and full of life, i already have lavender growning really well, and ive also just planted a pear tree. I would be greatfull for any suggestions! Thanks in advance! :D

hi sam congrats youve decided to do a bit of gardening, ive been in my house 5 years and only just started last year, like u i have a baby and also a 3 year old so i know about low maitenence,we cleared our garden totally of everything, and last year wot i did was get about 8 pots (inherited from hubbies grandma) got some multipurpose compost got myself to b&q and just picked wot i liked really and planted them into the pots, they looked a bit sp**** at first but as the summer went on they looked fantastic and i was so proud of myself all i did was water them daily, ihad lillies begonia salvia and some others i cant remember the name of,but if u have got limited time i really would recommend it,it brightened my garden up no end.Ive got the bug now and this year ive started early hubbies dug out some borders and ive started putting some shrubs in,this whole gardening lark is so theraputic i bet u get the bug like me lol,tc and let us know how u get on also check out the container gardening topic on this site thats really fab for advice. amanda

Before you chose any plants check your soil type and sun/shade aspects. Get a good structure/designe in your mind before you start so you don't have to move things.

hi sam, hanging baskets are nice and water retaining gel in the soil before you put the plug plants in are a big help.buy some plant food aswell to give them all a good start.

And you can look forward to baby growing up and joining in, by digging up lovely worms for you! :D I'd have one word of warning about pots - they're hard, and can orivide a nice target for little toddlers' heads! It's amazing how they manage to mis acres of open, empty space and choose the one hard thing to knock against!! So watch out!

thanks for all your advice, we had the turf laid yesterday and it looks brilliant, i like looking out of my kitchen window now! im going to the garden centre later to get some shrubs, also want lavender, rosemary and thyme so the garden smells nice, will get some nice bedding plants to! I have a few pots so going to get something for them too! Any ideas on a climber that doesnt take over the garden and looks pretty?

Climbers that I would go for, are clematis (different flowering seasons too) roses and honeysuckle.
