Just moved in and have a bit of work to do, anyone know whats wrong with the grass ? I've got a dog but he does his widdles up by a tree. Havent a clue what to put on it.

Decking needs reviving but not sure if it needs modifying at all.

    Any ideas ?

Thats a nice size garden, I'd love that size! The lusher looking stuff is well fed grass, your lawn needs a bit of work as it looks a little starved and in many places looks poorly drained. Needs weeding too :-D

It depends also on how keen you are?

Just out of curiosity, what plans do you have?

As far as I'm concerned those patches of green growth are from dog pee, are you sure he only goes up the tree?

I've got a bitch collie and she kills the grass in the summer when its dry, but the urine acts as a fertiliser in the winter when it gets diluted.

Just scatter some weed and feed, before a good rainstorm and it will green up all over.

Decking looks good, its got potential.

My plans are to scrub the decking and give it a treatment of stain oil, dont know about a handrail perhaps or maybe some steps ?

The grass probably has been done by the dog, but I try to get him out before he does his business. I was in B&Q looking at the weed and feed isle, there is way too much, what kind of weed and feed do I need ? Aftercut, beforecut, evergreen......help.

I wouldn't say its the dog. I'd get it aerated (if the soil is soft enough) then feed it. Looks like there's a lot of compaction in there. Give it a few weeks and it should be much healthier.

You could "hump" the lawn up to the decking. If I had a lawn that size I wouldnt have it flat, I would contour it with a few gentle humps.

Just get evergreen, the rest are just there to make you spend your money, go for the basic most cheapest.
The dog is helping you out, but come the summer it will be different.

I dont think you can have a dog and a pristine lawn, just settle for a nice bit of grass.:)

Hi Dundee Stokie, first point your grass .i am just looking out the window at this moment and my neighbour's garden is identical to yours. she has a large labrador who has been very busy since last year on the grass . the grass was only cut last week and it is showing these clumps of large lush grass appearing around the lawn. the remainder of the grass looks ok(for this time of year).
so it appears PETE is correct. your decking .i laid new decking last year. i did not stain it as the wood had a lovely reddish tinge about it. i used Ronseal decking oil and it brought the natural wood colour up very nice,if you stain it ,it will look good for a short period of time. if the decking is being used regular the stain will start to disappear and look grotty. my advice- use a high pressure
water gun and clean off all the verdigris etc, when the decking is dry and free from the muck !
use the Ronseal Decking Oil. it will bring back the natural wood colour/grain and look much better than Stain. (1) i would build a nice step up .(2) a secure hand rail.(3 ) this would make a great barbecue and seating area , with your tree a great garden feature . music .
