This shrub is growing up at the top of our lane and is very attractive. This is a cutting from new growth as I want to root it, the old growth is much darker.

It's a lovely soft, leathery leaf ... any ideas ... ?

Many thanks in advance as always.

PS Why can't I change font and colour on a new thread ... or use smilies for that matter .... ?

Actually, Pete, it does look rather like it ... but there are only oranges, lemons and olives trees nearby ... maybe a bird pooped a seed out ...:heehee:

I hate trying to identify plant cuttings without seeing the flower! Have you seen it in flower?? The photo is a really good
one [different from the blurred, dim, distant and little subjects you sometimes see] so congratulations on taking it. Have you seen the flowers and does it give berries? What would you say it's height is? Questions, questions, questions!! A very hesitant first guess from the red stem and shape of the leaves is that it might be a Snowberry which is used in hedges
all over. That gives pink or white flowers and red or white berries.. I'm sure somebody more knowledge than me will
i.d. your cutting with more accuracy and certainty even at the cutting stage. If it is a Snowberrry they can get big and need keeping under control. One last point, if it gets up and walks about it's a Triffid!!

Hello Armandii and I don't think I've welcomed you to GC .. so welcome.

Thank you for your comments on the photographs ... I too dislike the dim and distant foggy images we are supposed to recognise.

No, I have never seen flowers on this specimen .. it is only about 1,5 meters tall at the moment. I had not noticed this shrub before today. That is like I did not notice the 4 meter tall almond tree that has seeded itself in my garden only 5 meters away from it's mother and I only noticed it yesterday because it has bloomed for the first time!

I have never seen Snowberries here although I know them ... I live in Southern Portugal, in Algarve.

Looks like Carob to me too, same as the one I grew a few years ago.

Hi Victoria, thank you for the welcome! I'm so new to Gardeners Corner that I haven't quite grasped the concept that it's international and therefore my i.d. didn't take that into account!! As they used to say on a certain TV programme - "Stupid Boy"!! Therefore I will retract my i.d. with as much grace as I can and give
up! I am envious of your ability to grow the more exotic plants that I can't but I do love the plants that I can grow with the challenges that our awkward, crazy. but at most times lovable climate gives us.

I do agree Strongy and yes, Pete, but I only 'harvested' them for the likes of your goodself from my friends ...:D

Armandii, we all have to learn and some of us have been here for a long time. I like to look at the Profile of a person before I respond to a question, then I have a 'feel' about to whom I am responding.

I think I am one of the few 'foreigners' left here ... my sister Kedi-Gato from Germany and Florida is another and we have Penny in Ontario from Canada and Redstar from the US who are all regular visitors to the forum.

Hoping you are enjoying the forum so far and continue to do so.

I'm really enjoying the Gardening Corner and it's really good to get advice from Gardeners who's experience and knowledge I'm able to benefit from. I've been gardening for some years and have a comprehensively stocked garden that my sandy neutral soil will accommodate. I go to Garden Centres vowing not to buy anymore plants and fail miserably!! I have a reasonably good knowledge of plants grown in the UK but I've never had the inclination to specialize in one genus of plant, I just love the experience and learning you get when trying to grow any plant for the first time. Your family is certainly is certainly internationally spread out and each of you have a different climate to contend with when gardening. Thank you for your thoughts.

Sorry theplantsman, but Elaeagnus x ebbingei has alternate leaves.

I agree that it is Ceratonia siliqua, Carob. Notice that there is no terminal leaflet

Looks like a Pittosporum and can be propagated by semi-ripe cuttings taken in spring.

Welcome Victoria.
Sorry Victoria, it is not Pittosporum. The leaves on Pittospoum are ...

Quote from Wiki...

"The leaves are spirally arranged or whorled, simple, with an entire or waved (rarely lobed) margin."

Ceratonia siliqua, Carob leaves are opposite each other with no terminal leaflet.
