I am tempted by this Aloe Vera, because you hear so much good about its healing properties. Any experience with this plant? does it really heal?

I've used it as a salve for minor burns, very soothing. Leeks do a good job with that too.

Aloe Vera is a most extraordinary salve for sunburn and it is so good that, using it after sunburn, your skin won't peel.

I was on holiday in Aruba one time and we were sitting on the beach watching a cruise ship in the bay. A load of people got off of it in small boats, came nearer the beach and then dropped over the sides snorkeling and diving.

Wondering what was so interesting below the water, I wandered out with a snorkel and mask, stood on an underwater rock and bent down to look under the water. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was like being in the middle of a tropical aquarium with thousands of multi-coloured tropical fish swimming around my legs. I stood on the rock with my head in the water looking at the fish for two hours, completely forgetting about my back, the only part of my body which was exposed to the sun.

Later that evening, I was in agony with severe sunburn on my back. The landlady, in the place we were staying in, told us to cut a leaf off an Aloe Vera plant growing in their front garden, peel it and rub it on my back. The cooling effect was instantaneous and using another leaf each day, my back never peeled at all. Mind you, by the end of the holiday, her poor Aloe Vera, which had been a big plant, was completely leafless.

It's an amazing plant.

Works for me as well. I had a rather nasty hot water burn on my arm. The Aloe plant was cut and on it in no time at all and it works a real treat.
I have several growing around our house.
Every house should have one as a first aid first fix.
Amazing stuff.

I had exactly the same experience in yugoslavia when I was a kid. Only problem was my mum thought vasaline was a good after sun lotion. It just cooked my back and all the skin fell off.

That was terrible, but not so terrible as going to the naturist beach at the salinas on Ibiza.

Was very concerned about the wedding tackle & was carefull to not over expose to the sun. Forgot about the backs of my legs, which hadn't seen the sun either. Spent the next 48 hours in bed, starving, unable to move, whilst missing out on a romantic tryst with a lovely young Welsh girl.

:) Aloe Vera - not only is it a good medicinal plant it grows well too without much attention! Has to be frost protected and does not like the full glare of the sun all day - someone gave me some rooted shoots last summer that they had just broken off their 'mother' plant and I am quite amazed at how well they have grown in my greenhouse - even through winter when I only have frost protection heating! They will make superb plants by summer then I will experiment more with their healing properties!
Have only ever had one plant before and I just kept it as a pot plant, makes a nice pot specimen too.

Hi Everyone

Has anyone grown Aloe Vera from seed? I'm thinking of giving it a try as the plants are quite expensive. If you have, how long do they take to grow? How long before i would have a decent sized plant?

Thanks:)

I can confirm that aloe vera is a fantastic moisturiser. Used it today on dry skin and I cannot think of a cream which would work better!

Blimey,

Northumberland sounds a bit north of bristol.

Glad you've got some. Like I say, once you've got one you will get another. Might try potting mine into bigger pots & see how big they get:thumbsup:

Mine usually grow so top heavy they fall over and destroy themselves on the hard tiled floor.
But theres always plenty of babies to rescue and pot on.
