If it has Windows 98 on, the chances are that the hardware just isn'tup to the job of running a later, more bloated version of Windows.

    Thanks Dave:thumbsup:

Worth asking before I go and do something pointless.

Up-grading from 98 to 7 on a elderly laptop, never mind a desk tower, can be a real pain, Ziggy. I hate computers but a lot of my work was computer driven and when Windows 7 came in I held back on converting to see what the "bugs" would be. Surprisingly there were only a few and fairly minor. Having said that I subscribe to several computer mags and the number of complaints about people having problems trying to up-grade just flooded the pages, and still do. The mags were having to do special articles to cope with the subject and help people. Most of your existing software won't work with 7 so you'll need to up-grade that. I waited a fair time to decide that it was easier and less stressful to get a new computer with 7 installed. I'm glad I did because 7 is pretty good and any problems have been dealt with by Microsoft fairly quickly. Luckily there's a lot of free
software specifically written for 7 and you don't have to spend a penny on software if you don't want to. Buying a new computer is expensive and as soon as you buy it it's out of date, but to me it was a better choice than up-grading it, [costs money], and then having to deal with all the problems that come with it,,,,,,,,,, but it's a personal choice.

This is the very reason why I ditched Windows when Vista came out (the trouble people had with that) and switched to Ubuntu/Linux. The software is free and there are thousands of applications available, several to do the same job so you can take your pick. It costs nothing to try them all then decide which suits you best.

My computer life is much calmer since I changed.

What ports does this laptop have USB, PCMCIA, ethernet (NOT phone jack for internal modem)?

Would a PCMCIA ethernet card adapter and a long cable connection to the router do the job very cheaply?

Are you sure they're USB? I've never seen a USB port with pins.

If it is that spec then I'd say there is a good chance it will work with a USB wifi dongle. Ziggy, there's no harm in trying one from PC World, if it doesn't work then take it back for a refund.

Sorry, I meant that separately, 6 ports in all.

Sorry, I'd read it wrong. Reading it again it makes sense what you said.

Is the phone socket one actually phone socket sized, or slightly smaller? If its slightly smaller then it sounds like an ethernet port.

Blimey, you are right, just tried the phone plog in it & its narrower & taller.

Thought the Ether was something made up by Victorian scientists to explain the transmission of radio waves thru a vacuum, didn't know it was real

That means you could get a network cable and run it straight from the laptop to the router (the magic box that Virgin Media supplied:) )
