Sorry, I forgot about Dorset. I know its the south west, but somehow overlooked it. Will definitely consider it.

As for North Yorks, I know there's a lot of good stuff right on the doorstep, but the trouble is it's a tad too familiar. I did my growing up round here, and even when I was away in Sheffield for 11 years I regularly came back up. The amount of walking and cycling I did when I was younger, I think I must have covered every inch of north yorks several times. Its a great area but I'd feel as though we weren't really on holiday, if that makes any sense?

    It does Dave.

You need to get away sometimes. I had a rare 3 day break in Nerja, Espania last year & it was so good to get away somewhere different.

Give us a shout when you've worked out where you want to go & i'll see what enhancements I can sort out for your break :dbgrtmb:

We used to take our daughter to Dorset several times a year from the age of 18 months (and still go there), staying mainly at Charmouth with the beach just a short walk away and a river full of ducks to feed and the Red Arrows to watch from the beach if going when it's Lyme Regis Lifeboat Week - which we did every year.

Going East for the day we'd call in at Abbotsbury 'Childrens Farm' - baby goat feeding bottled milk was a must every day! and the Swannery - mid-May/June for signets (we'd buy a season ticket that covered both as we went there so often). Weymouth has a great very gently shelving sandy beach ideal for paddling/inflatables, donkey & kiddie 'fairground' rides, punch & judy, etc. On the way back we'd quite often call back in at the Childrens Farm again http://www.abbotsbury-tourism.co.uk/childrens_farm/farm_whats_on.htm N.B. Watch out for the speed cameras either end of Chideock.

Heading West, Lyme Regis has another great sandy beach (with a pub beer garden backing onto the sand), an aquarium on the harbour - go when they're feeding the congers, dogfish, mullet, rays, wrasse, crabs, lobsters, etc. in the big open tanks! and crab catching competition during Lifeboat Week (& the Red Arrows here but it gets a bit crowded), further on there's the Seaton Tramway and then the Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary - went there 3 times one week (it's free).

And our way back home we'd do Corfe Castle & Swanage.

Dorset is lovely but we went to Weymouth the beach is wonderful and it is ideal for sailors but parking there is a nightmare if you are not stopping somewhere with parking space.

Bear in mind you can only fish the North coast an hour either side of the high tide, after that the sea just goes.

Don't let the little one go off the beach when tide is out. The sand stops & the mud starts.
Its like quicksand, seen many people being helped out.
