    Here we go..:heehee:

I planted a climbing rose late last year and was going to make a trellis for it to climb up, but yesterday dinner time whilst I was at work, I decided to have a play with a slab of wood that I had knocking around and cut it into two curves 60" high x 6" wide x 3" deep. I was then going to site them approx 6' apart and suspend wires between for the rose to grow on.

Things have changed now though, as I decided that it was a waste of the wood, and I would rather use it for my ongoing quest to create differing and unique talking points throughout the garden.

After playing around with many layouts, I have decided to secure them vertically, but cannot decide whether to have the two pieces spaced apart to give an impression of space and light, or position them in line.

Please cast your opinion with 'A' being together and 'B' being apart. Not being securely fixed or level does make it hard to decide, but I reckon 'B' apart. The final position will be in the centre of an island bed.

This view would be pretty much the same with both positions

    As would this.

    A :)

(You might be able to go back to your original post and change it into a POLL - that would mean you won't have to add up the answers :thumb: )

The reason I think A is better is because the parallax will look good when viewed from an angle, whereas I think B will be "confusing" to the eye in that regard. But I am completely rubbish at all things related to design ...

I don't think so, and in fact you have already shown what I was after.:)

Which ever way that I decide to construct it, and at one stage it was almost hortzontal to the ground, I want people to think about and question what I have done and why I have done it. I beleive that the subject would be very stale and boring if it didn't create differing opinions.:dbgrtmb:

I also have several other ideas that I want to put into action, including a 10' tall single stem flower with leaves constructed from scrap oak.

[Disclaimer: I'm a bit weird at times so take what I say with a pinch of salt]

    A. makes me immediately think of conflict. The lines start in harmony and union, then do their best to seperate from each other as the eye works up, or scanning down, the two lines are forced together against their will as they go down.

    B. looks like harmony and unity. They entwine each other while watching each other's backs. From some angles it looks like part of a celtic knot, which symbolises two things entwined and enternally be one.

I would first like to say that I think all your work I have seen up to now is very creative and pleasing to the eye. :dbgrtmb:

    I think A is better.

I find that B offends my eye but am having difficulty working out why. I think it is because the two arcs cross too high up and seem to make it unbalanced.

I keep looking back at them and the more often I look the more B feels wrong.

When I do any structural work or garden design in my own garden I just do what 'feels' right. I don't try to follow anything that the 'experts' say so I think you should just go with your heart. :)

Many thanks for all the replies.:)

I was rained off today, so thought that amongst other jobs, I would dig in and concrete the base posts for the project. After making four different patterns, I opted to position the design 4" apart sideways and 13" apart in the other dimension. The square base shown is part of the pattern to hold it square and level while the concrete sets. It's going to be hard to resist not finishing it tomorrow, but the concrete won't really have set hard enough so I mustn't give in to temptation!:)

As an aside, this is the piece of wood for the next project.:thumb:

I also forgot to say that given that the projects are all in my mother-in-laws garden, she could have a shock when she gets back from her holiday in a weeks time!!!!:heehee:

I like the idea of an Acer.:)

I had been thinking of perhaps a dwarf azalea, but a deep coloured Acer would be perfect.
