no processed food?

    Yes it would.

    Parmesan, queso vejo, vino,rhubarb crumble, yoghurt, pickled beetroot, smoked mackerell, need I go on.

    What do you class as processed food, Miraflores.
    I tend to cook everything from scratch from fresh ingredients - but maybe looking at Ziggy's list I do eat processed food.
    What are we including in the list ?????

    As mentioned above about what is classed as processed, I think the boundary lies where a natural food has been altered for a longer shelf life... So, for example, tinned sweetcorn is a processed food.

    Not all processed foods are necessarily bad for you, and I think that they certainly enrich our lives. Without any processed foods, there isnt much variety as you said miraflores

    On a personal level, I think I could live life quite happily on a simple fresh food diet.

    Watching all the school kids at lunchtime around here... I doubt they would manage it for more than a morning though.

    So Frozen food is "processed". :scratch: It's definitely been altered.:WINK1: It's usually frozen within 4hrs of being picked. Unless you're lucky enough to have an allotment, you can't get much fresher than that. The "fresh food" you get from S'markets has been kicking around for days.:heehee: So, yep, we do have a lot more variety and choice.:dbgrtmb:

    Frozen food good, like you say, frozen quickly, retains vitamins & minerals.

    2 week old "fresh" food from supermarkets, irradiated ?

    Both lots grown with artficial fertilisers and covered in chemical sprays. :heehee:

    We've been making everything from scratch for about 10 years and now find 'ready meals' adversely affect our digestion.

    Shiney, how do you think the "fresh foods" out of S'markets are grown?:heehee: If we want to talk about organically grown stuff, that wouldn't be relevant to this thread.:WINK1: As I intimated before, most of us, unfortunately, don't have allotments where we can control the growing environment so we have to use the best nutritionally veg. we can get. If you've got a BIG garden or an allotment. I envy you, mate.:)

    we've been processing food since the Stone Age!! Man turned grass into bread, milk into butter and cheese.
    Today's food in tins and packets isn't much different except for the fact we put additives in it to preserve it, provide extra taste and dies to colour it to make it more attractive to the eye. IF we didn't like it there wouldn't be a market for it!! Even most frozen food has something in it to preserve or make it attractive to the buyer. Anyone who has an allotment or vegetable garden that can contribute to the household is lucky, but we all are tempted to buy "processed food" aren't we??!!

    I eat what Mrs Chopper puts in front of me. I don't ask questions, just eat.

    I went shopping with Mrs Chopper recently. She said I could go with her as long as she kept me on a chain and that I promised not to eat any children or bite Volvos in the car park.

    Have to say it was a bit of an eye opener. The price of some food was just ridiculous. It appeared to me that most of the stuff that Mrs Chopper was buying was stuff that we could either grow ourselves or find an alternative, but they were also the most expensive. Very clever marketing ploy. Advertise stuff that you don't buy every day at "Reduced" prices, but charge through the nose for the stuff you buy all the time.

    Canned stuff always tastes funny to me. Ready meals remind me of private hospital food, a cut above NHS pigswill. I don't like fancy food. Just good wholesome English food. I now have the land to grow a lot myself. Any extras I can pick and freeze immediately, such as beans and peas. So two goodreasons forgrowing your owninstead of processed food. It tastes better and should be cheaper.

    Hi cajary,

    I was just responding to ziggy's point about irradiated food :WINK1:. At the moment I'm not so sure about the advantages of a big garden - I'm housebound from injuries from overdoing the work in the garden :DOH:. Mrs shiney keeps saying something about me getting older but I don't understand what she's on about :heehee:

    Well, my MBH used to tell me I was getting older and should slow down. :WINK1: That was before the young, muscular, guys started working next door. Now I can't understand why she wants me to work overtime.:scratch: :loll:

    :scratch: :scratch: :scratch: Sorry folks but I think you have to find the fine line between preserving food & processing it......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :WINK1: :scratch: Preserving has been done for hundreds of years.... Processing for the last 60 or so mainly..!!!! :scratch::scratch::scratch:
