Hi stevey,
Most chillies are perennial evergreen in their natural habitat so this is not unusual. Depending on the variety, you may need to prune it later on in the season.

If it was a large plant it may start to sprout branches very quickly and get leggy. Then nipping out the ends will help it bush out.
