The Government is proposing to cancel the May Day Bank Holiday and move the Bank Holiday to October or as an alternative invent a new Bank Holiday [Trafalgar Day] for October. Does anybody think this is a good idea? Should they leave May Day alone and add another Bank Holiday in the year?

Well the Tories have always been against May Day.

I'd rather be wandering around Kingsbury May Fair in the spring, rather than trudging round a muddy field in my wellies in October.

A new holiday in October would be a good idea, its a long haul from August bank holiday until Christmas.
As to moving the mayday one, NO WAY.

We get about the least holidays in the whole of Europe so we need a few more to bring us in line with most of them.
They keep prattling on about us getting more in line with Europe, so lets start getting a few of the good bits, instead of all the red tape and other stupid ideas they come up with.

I like May Day. That should stay put. Apart from generally being a good time of year for a day off, May Day is steeped in tradition going back many hundreds of years. As far as I know it predates christianity reaching our fine shores.

Does anyone know if the royal wedding is an official holiday, only I'm being made to take one of my days holiday off on that day, ie. I'm not getting an extra day.

It is officially a bank holiday:

There you go, straight from the government themselves. A genuine free day off if your contract says bank hols are not counted in your holiday allowance.

Sorry to disappoint you. I would guess that your employer is correct. although it is a Bank Holiday you don't automatically get a free day.

Nearly all Contracts of Employment state that you get x amount of days holiday plus the eight customary and Bank Holidays. They are usually written that way because the government can make additional days for special occasions and there is no limit to that.

I spoke to ACAS the other week about this matter (I've been retired for 10 years but I still get people asking for information) and they said that you should check your Contract.

If it says you get the eight days then you have to use one of your normal days if you are having the wedding day off.

The government make themselves look good by making it a Bank Holiday but it doesn't give you an extra day.

When I was running my business I always gave my staff the special days off without asking for a day back but I was one of those rare things - a nice boss :heehee:

As a ex-manager, now retired, I'm betting even if they do make the Royal Wedding a "Bank Holiday" few companies will pay their workers for it, especially those companies that are 24/7. You're not working for a company run by Gadafi are you?
