I hope your friends are ok Marley. The thing to remember in situations like this is that so many people are trying to make phone calls at the same time that often the networks jam, so the fact you haven't heard anything yet could just be that.

The only consolation I can think of in this disaster is that New Zealand is a good Technically advanced Nation and are very good a coping with fact that its such a unstable pair of islands And I am sure all the people there know that the motherland is wishing them are deepest respects for all the Hurt and Tragedy they have been suffering
Keep the faith guys!

Yes, it's very dreadful Marley. I don't think we could even begin to imagine what it's like to be in a major catastrophe like that - or any other.
I do hope your friends are OK and you hear from them soon. As the others say, the communication systems are probably shot and that's why you haven't heard.

Marley, positive thoughts going out for your friends well being.:)

As an aside to the plight of your friends, I happened to be scanning the BBC news articles about teh disaster last night, and what struck me was the amount of idiots standing around taking photos. Taking photos would be the last thing on my mind. My focus and actions would be on helping others, I just don't get the mentality of some people.

I' sorry to hear about your friends being in the disaster area, Marley. I'm in the same position as I've got a nephew and family at Christchurch and like you I'm having trouble trying to find out if they're ok. They seem to be having a bucket load of trouble and disasters down there if you take into account Australia being hit by fires, flood and Hurricanes. Not good!

Hi marley

The systems are down. My cousen who lives there has just been able to get though to us but she had to get to friends 30KM away and that took for ever. Luckly they have a 4x4 other wise they could not have got out of the city. You know what they say 'no news is good news' I do hope they are safe and well and my heart goes out to you!!

Keep thinking positive thoughts and positive things will happen!!

I recently read that the safest protection is to gather closely to the side (not under) of a sturdy piece of furniture, because whatever will fall down will create a little vacuum between the furniture and the floor.

I don't know if I would have the nerves...It is kind of like swimming near a shark and not having to move because otherwise he will attack you...
