Local Names for wildflowers

    This might not work as a thread but lets give it a go, i'll start us off,

    Arum Maculatum,

    Down here some call them "Dogs Dickies":heehee:

    When I was a child we called Umbelifloras Dogs Flourish because we thought they grew where the dogs had pooed. :rolleyespink:

    Couldn't find a reference about why they came to be called that but did find an interesting page on the origin of the words

    I remember being told by one of my old tutor's that it was just the Victorians renaming plants which they thought had rather vulgar names:heehee: at which point he'd give you a run down of some of his favourites including "Prick on a Plate" for Arum Maculatum


    on another note on the Isle of Wight Centranthus rubra commonly known as Red Valerian is in fact called Ventnor Pride

    They changed the name of a street in Merriott, Somerset to Shutter Oak, thereby hiding its true former purpose.:heehee:

    We called Dandelions Pee the beds. Suppose it refers to the diuretic properties of the plant.
    Maybe the name is universal - the French certainly use it.
