This sounds like something that should go into the beginners section but it's not a simple bulb, I know how to plant them.

I bought some alchemilla mollis, I think they're better known as Lady's Mantle, bulbs today and when I opened the pack to have a look at them I was greeted with these two:

    Picture One
    Picture Two

My guess would be that they're planted the way the picture is taken, after all the roots are at the bottom, but at both ends, left and right on the picture, are green sections of new growth, which should come out the top. :loll:

Which way up should you plant them?

    Thanks a lot :dbgrtmb:

Hi HBK, I've got Lady's Mantle all along the front of my front garden and all along the path leading to my door.
The first pic is correct, plant it with the roots down. Once in it will seed prolifically and you won't need to plant any after!!

I'd plant them as they appear in those pictures, with the 'mass' at the top - spread the roots around the mass, kind of 'splaying' them out around the mass/crown of the plant.
    That's how i'd do it :D

    Hi HBK,

I can see your confusion. They are a spreading plant so are itching to go out sideways.

You are right about the roots being at the bottom, they will sort themselves out once planted by geotropism anyway. So even if you plant them upside down they will still feel the earths magnetic field

You are thinking of homing plants Ziggy. Vinca is like that, it knows where it wants to go to and then sets off at high speed. :)

Its not a silly as you think though Kristen.

I have a friend who sells Ranunculus figaria at car boot sales - and people love it. When they get back home they find out it is also called Lesser Celandine. :D
