hi i am now building a fenced off area for my dogs.

it will be filled with about 7" of soil and them grassed over .

is there anything i can mix with the soil to help the grass and drainage ,

and what grass seed is best to use with dogs as looking for something hard wearing and longrooted if such a thing exists

thanks for any advice cheers j

Woody, you've got 3 Staffies - go for Astro turf!! I can't think of a grass that's going to withstand the frolicking of 3 dogs in a confined space. If you're determined to go ahead, use grit to help with the drainage, and you can get heavy duty grass seed to try. Keep the dogs off the area until it's established and then stand back in amazement as they destroy it, in good fun, in minutes!! You only need ordinary lawn feed for the grass should it become a miracle [to be visited by clergy and blessed] and survive!!

Dogs and lawns don't mix. Keep them off as much as you can, especially for the 1st wee of the day. This is the one that does the most damage.

Bear in mind if you're fencing it off you're cutting down airflow too, another thing that's not going to do a lawn any favours.

Use a rye mix and good luck (you'll need it).

Just ordinary grit, potting grit or the equivalent from the builders yard, which ever is cheaper. Just dig it in and it will improve your drainage. Let us know how you get on!!

I might be wrong here, but I think bitch pee is worse than that of a male for the lawn.

One of our customers had a 'bowling green' lawn and found that following his dog with a watering can did the trick. I might add though that he is hugely keen on his lawn and spends lots of time and money on keeping it looking pristine hence the extreme measures!

I fear though that with 3 staffies, wee wee is going to be your least worries regarding a lawn

p.s. He used to water the area the dog had pee'd on... he didnt water the dog :heehee:

Not sure if bitch pee is worse or if it's just because the bitch squats and the dog will cock it's leg against a post or something.
I've heard the tomato ketchup thing before, not sure if it works. Also the jury's still out on the dog rocks too (I've yet to find anyone who says it works).
Best option is to keep em off for the 1st of the day and water the rest as best you can.
