Hello from Midlothian

Hello Gardeners Corner!

I'm a total novice to this gardening lark but I'm hopeful that I can transform a pretty rough rural garden into a wonderful space for us to enjoy with friends and family.

I have what looks like a pretty fertile garden as we are surrounded by farmland which I suppose must yield a decent crop for them to persevere! The garden is north-facing and is pretty much a long strip of uneven grasses with a couple of bushes, a planter, an oil tank, a windowless shed (which looks like a bunker/torture chamber!) and a gravelled area near to the house.

I'm thinking about sticking a patio in adjacent to the house to make a better use of the garden - with a comfortable dining area/sitting space I like to think we'll be drawn out to enjoy the garden.

Here's what I'm thinking about with the seating area. Feedback appreciated and please be patient with my total lack of gardening knowledge!

I'm sure you can make a great garden out of what you have there.
Here's my advice - don't rush to do anything. Have a good look at your garden and how you want to use it. Particularly, look at where the sun shines.
You want to use your garden as a living space so presumably you want the best of the climate in your garden.
If I read you rightly, your garden is on the north side of the house. The area you have marked out as your dining area will be in near permanent shade from the building when it is sunny and warm in the further from the house areas. Wait and have a look for yourself and see what are the best areas.
I would go for 2 areas - one for sitting in the sun and one for shade when it is too hot.

The windowless shed/torture chamber will make an ideal forcing shed for blanching Rhubarb, Witloof Chickory or even growing mushrooms if you put an LPG heater in there.

Alice, you are a lady after my own heart! I'm a meticulous planner and a bit of an anorak when it comes to thinking about and setting out how I want something to look. We moved into the property about four months ago and I've been watching the garden ever since. Some books I've read said I should watch it for a year before doing anything but I think that's a bit extreme!

Anyway I've added a bit more detail into the model, below, and I'm going to take some pictures this week and start a thread documenting my first year in gardening.
