    Paeonia tenuifolia

I've been trying to get my hands on this gorgeous herbacious variety. The one in the picture is even double-flowered and is probably some garden cultivar. Wild plants are single-flowered. It is not on sale in Bulgaria :( and I tried to order from overseas, but I was refused shipment as the shrubs were sold in large divisions and the container was 'too big'.

I'll keep trying. But look at the showy display of it! :dbgrtmb:

Anyone having it in their garden? I would be glad to see some pictures or acquire more information from real experience.

    Thank you in advance!

      Hi Spruce,
I haven't taken the picture myself and the nursery stocking it are Pottertons Nursery (check their alpines and plants section).

Strangely enough, the variety is native to the Balkan Peninsula: former Yugoslavia, Romania and Bulgaria (where I live). But here it is very rare or extinct (unfortunately). It is widely grown in Canada now and is said to be perfect for a fully sunny exposure, slopy terrains and rockeries. It falls dormant a bit earlier than other herbacious peonies though, and if you grow them in a group, its foliage will get yellow sooner.

I am trying to solicit one from the owners of a local plant nursery who propagate rare species (just as a side activity, not for sale). It will be single-flowered (if I ever get it). Keep your fingers crossed for me!!!! :thumb:

Well, if I do, I will upload my own picture (and most probably, it will be foliage only :D).

And, yes, I love this double-flowered one better! Never seen a real one myself... :(

Oh that's gorgeous, what a beautiful healthy looking plant.
I've ordered from Pottertons before, they're a good company.

I have a couple of them grown from wild collected seed, but they are not that easy to get to a decent size plant, in our garden at least.

      not for sale in Bulgaria?

Angelina, I have read that Paeonia Tenuifolia can be propagated by seed. Of course, it will take 3-4 years to see it bloom, but if you can't find it in your neck of the woods, would you like me so send you some seeds? It's just finishing blooming and I did not cut the flowers this year, so the seeds would mature. Mine is Paeonia Tenuifolia Rubra Plena.

Gile, all of my thanks for your kindness!
I found 1 plant from a friend. But it is of the wild, single-flowered variety, so I will happily accept your seeds! :yess:
I will browse my stuff now, to see what I can offer in exchange and I'll write you a message.
I can see this is your first post, but have you taken pictures of your peony in bloom? I would love to see them!:dbgrtmb:

Angelina, I do not have a decent picture of the blooms, I took a picture yesterday (after you asked), and that is of a fading flower with seed pods more prominent than the petals. However I tried to attach it to this e-mail and discovered - I am not able to, the "Manage Attachments" thing does not work for me... Bummer!

Well fancy that Angelina googled your fern leaf peony and it brought me here, what a flippin shame Pottertons is only 20 minutes from were I live, so I got all excited thinking I'd go and see if they had one, but after searching their online catalogue no sign of it,must have sold them all last year, they do have an open day soon though so may call just to check :dbgrtmb:, gorgeous plant love it :love30:

        Alexander here, speaking. [IMG]
They must have! Look at this:
        http://www.pottertons.co.uk/pott/browse.php?folder=380

Last year, when we ordered from the Bulgarian forum (it was in spring, if I remember right), the answer was something like: peonies are too developed now to be divided. Mine is a plain-flowering variety, which can be propagated from seed. The double-flowered cultivars can only be divided.

PLEASE, tell us if you manage to get one!!! :dancy:

Also, don't plant it in a group with other herbaceous peonies. It sheds its leaves earlier and will look 'ugly' among later flowering shrubs. :blue thumb:

You're right Alexander:heehee:, it was my fault I was searching Peony instead of Paeonia , just had another look when the open day is and unfortunately its when I'm away at Malvern flower show, might e-mail to see if they have any left to see if I can pick one up.
Thanks for the advice if I get one I'll remember that :dbgrtmb:
