Is brown sugar really healthier than white sugar?

I must say than I prefer the taste of refined brown sugar, but I do buy brown as well because they say that it is healthier. What is your view on this?

It depends on what you are referring to as brown sugar. A lot of 'brown' sugar that you buy in the supermarkets is white refined sugar with molasses added to give it colour.

Raw (unrefined) brown sugar is different and is usually labelled as Demerara or muscavado. These are usually made from from the sugar cane syrup. I think these are healthier options but I'm not a fan of sugar anyway.

This is how they refine sugar.

    I would prefer unrefined.

Demerara is nice in coffee, but prefer white sugar in tea.

Unrefined (brown) sugar is definitely better for you, as are all unrefined foods when compared to their refined counterparts.

Try muscavado (not demerara) sugar on porridge, it's lovely :)

However, even though it is healthier for you, doesn't mean you should get carried away. It's still sugar, and bad for you (and especially your waist line) in large quantities.

I used to be a 3 teaspoons full to a cup guy, until I got a heavy summer cold and then when I came out of it I couldn't stand it. Very strange. So I keep sugar [demarara and white] for guests. I confess I'm a sucker for the icing on a Christmas cake though!!

I use demerara in my coffee, and golden granulated in tea. I drink a lot more coffee than tea, so don't have as much of the g/gran which is white sugar that has been coloured. I have one spoonful in either drink and it's one of my only sources of sugar as I am not a sweet-toothed person and don't buy cakes, biscuits, chocs or any of those things (aren't I just a paragon of virtue??? :WINK1:)

Very good for you if you don't stuff yourself with sugar, although in my diet I do like to allow also for the pleasure of eating a little unhealthy food...
