Hi all, sorry if this a really dumb question but I had a chilli pepper plant last year that did really well, it was still producing peppers well into November. I forgot to bring it inside or at least protect it and after all the snow we had it looked like it had kind of died.

My question is... Do chilli's come back anyway or are they more of an annual and have i killed mine by leaving it outside? It looks dead to me, its just a twig now :( Id quite like it to come back but should i be looking to grow a new one instead?

If it looks dead Smoo, it probably is dead. Chillies are not all that hardy.
I would plant a new one now. Did you save any seed ?

I think its doomed unfortunately. There's no way a chilli plant could have survived the winter we've just come through.

The good news is though they are quick growing. Quick enough in fact that many people grow them as annuals, even though they are technically perennials, so you could get some new ones on the go and still get chillis off it this year.

Thanks for the replies, yes i think its had its day unfortunately.

Alice - I didn't save any seed no, but we got this plant of a friend who grows loads of chilli's, he actually said he was jealous of it because it grew much bigger than his ones :heehee:
If we ask nicely maybe he will give us another baby one? I'll remember to tuck away the next one this year though!

Sorry, but 'dead' and 'Dodo' come to mind. :heehee:

If you want to help them survive the winter you shouldn't let them have a temperature much lower than 60F. Now is the time to plant seeds for them but if you are lucky enough to have a friend who can give you a plant then you should smile nicely at them. :dbgrtmb:

Still going strong at 96 eh shinerz :dbgrtmb:

I have grown mine (well, sweet peppers... but same principle) from seed for the past few years, and they do get to a good size to produce plenty of fruit within the year, so I would say if you have got any seed... go for it as soon as!
