    Hi everyone

We've been having real problems with garden vandalism and theft recently. Can anyone recommend some good but cheap security lights - I'm on a tight budget. I've had a look on ebay but I'm never too sure about buying off there and I don't really know what I should be looking for either.

    :help:

    Thanks in advance

The trouble with security lights is that cats set them off, so after a while you and the neighbours stop paying attention to them. They also let thieves and vandals see what they are doing.

Are brutal plants an option? Wild roses are nice, and with their razor sharp hooked thorns on gently swaying stems, anyone trying to climb through them would surely make plenty of noise to alert you of their presence.

 Hi Heather, well that is horrid for you then.....
There is allot more to think about really before you spend money though I think.... Do they come in at a specific point.... Any particular days.? What sort of things are they taking or doing..??? How long has it been going on for.. Any reason you can think why... If you can try to look at it in a more specific way I am sure we can tailor something to your needs between us.... Post some photos of the bad points if it will help.. Look forward to hearing from you..

I have 4 security lights all set at different times, from 2 minutes to 5 minutes, yes cats and any animals can set them off,but I also have CCTV covering the front and back gardens,so when they do come on I can see from the front room:)and then let the dogs out.

Hi Heather, could you describe your garden and then we maybe able to help out with more definite solutions. If you could answer some of Clueless's questions we will be able to get an idea of the situation and garden.

    Along with the lights.
I would use a water shooter fixed up out of reach on the house wall.
A nice cold shower might make them think twice.
I have one to deter herons and cats they are movement activated and if the animals do set it off in the night you get your garden watered.
Also I noticed today along the fence by where I live they had , what was advertised on the board as "ornamental fence edging".
Looked like sharp plastic points to me. :WINK1:

As for Ebay you don't have to worry as long as you pay with paypal you are covered and can return the items if they are not up to scratch and will get your money back.
Ebay almost always favours the buyer.

"WOO let the dogs out?" :D

    Sorry couldn't resist :)

Apart from the tight budget constraints I favour CCTV and lights. The police can't do much without evidence, which they don't have much time to collect for petty crime, so handing them the evidence gets the job done.

Don't record it on your computer, they will take away whatever it is on, so make sure recording is to a removable drive or similar.

Heather, have you a Neighbourhood Watch scheme, if so ask them for advice. Or ask your community policeperson who would come around and advise if you asked.

    Thanks for everyone's replies.

I think part of the problem is my garden is completely open to the front and the side and has a shared drive, so I can't put up fences or hedges. Suspect it's mostly oportunists or kids as it's the pots and hanging baskets that seem to 'wander off'.

I'll check out B&Q for the lights as they sound like a bargain. Pretty sure my cat will have lots of fun setting them off (almost as much as he does digging up bulbs!).
