When to scarify?

Hello forums members.

Quick and simple question.

When is the best time to scarify your grass?
I do it throughout the year.
I just don't know when to start. I've heard that you shouldn't scarify too early in the year.

 

Well I've just done mine and now have to reseed loads as it tore it up. Ground v soft and weeds grow faster than grass at the mo to fill the gaps.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I'll be leaving the front lawn a bit before I wreck that too.

My front lawn is already wrecked, its full of moss and dandelions, so I may well take the drastic action of scarifying it soon, then I might chuck a mix of compost, sharp sand and grass seed over the top.

 

My lawn is also a mess. Beyond reprieve I think. I spent yesterday and today scarifying and mowing off moss. I filled 12 large dustbin bags!

It's still choked, so a new lawn next year I think.

 

I've given some TLC to my parents lawn this year - first such care since it was sown back in 1986....! Moss infested and generally looking sorry for itself. Scarified, raked, reseeded...supposed 5 day grass seed hasn't done what it's supposed, shall have to repeat the process, argh!!

Nows the time to start giving the lawn some care, have just started here but will be a long job as loads of lawn to do (gardens are 7 acres to give you some idea).
heres the way i have always prepared and do it every 2 years this way.

1. Treat whole lawn with Lawn Sand ( follow instructions on bag to the letter)
2. Scarify, preferably with a mechanical scarifyer.
3. Clear all scarfied material away.
4. After no less than 4 days mow lawns clearing clippings away, its always best to collect clippings through the year and not mow without the box on your mower as by leaving the clipping you are promoting moss and thatch in your lawns.
5. Hollow tine the area and clear remnants, if this is not possible then airate with a fork all over.
6. Mix sharp sand and a good pre-bagged compost at 50/50 mix and spread over lawn using the back of a rake, the bigger the better really making sure the mix gets into the holes made by the tining.
7. Leave for a week or so then put on a good lawn fertilizer...
8. Enjoy your envigorated lawn!!!!

 

Did my little patch out front a couple days OK.
Yes it got some moss in it but its looking a lot better then it diid this time a year OK.
This is because it had a lot of treatment during last season. So, it looks promising for this year.
