    Hi Folks

I would like some suggestions for planting under my apple Tree about 15' high and spread (James Grieves I think) in the SW corner of my back garden. The apple tree is at the back of my garden on the southern side boardering with my neighbours garden we have a 5' open fence (gaps of about 2" between each upright) between our gardens some some direct sun light gets through to the base of the apple tree but not much. To the back of my garden directly behind the apple tree is a birch tree and a yew beside this which take up alot of the water when it rains. To the front edge of the spread of the apple tree I have hostas. I would like to plant something behind the hostas.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

    Best wishes

    Richard

    Pachysandra might suit you.

Alchemilla Mollis does fine in almost any conditions and it self seeds so you'll send up with more plants in a few years.

    Hi friends.
The Alchemilla mollis and Pachisandra are carpeting plants both, and they disappears behind the Hosta.

I think that our friend need some plant that come out behid the Hosta.
I can suggest Digitalis purpurea or Salvia splendens!!!

    What do you think?

Is this a real Apple Tree, where you will walk around it and pick apples from it. And where you need to spray it for bugs etc. Guess I don't understand, if it is a real apple tree, then planting something under it, would be stomped on as your picking the apples.

BTW, I had Pachisandra, hated it, the leaves stayed stuck inside, too much work to rake it out. Pulled all of it out. Put Hosta's in, much easier to clean around in the fall/winter.
