I planted some red onion sets about a week ago now; they are under fleece and shooting nicely, one or two have lifted themselves out of the ground so I've had to push them back down...

So the question is now, what's the best care to give them from now on to try and ensure a reasobale crop?, I know they are prone to bolting under certain conditions..

Do they like to be kept moist or do they favour drier conditions etc..?

    Thanks

As with all onions, keep the soil moist but not saturated!

Also be vigilant with the weeding. If the bed has been properly prepared beforehand, no further action should be required.

    Have a good harvest :)

I never have a problem with red onions.
Just plant the sets and let them get on with it.
And I always plant a short row, shoulder to shoulder, and use them as spring onions while I'm waiting and waiting for the real thing to be ready

Can I ask a question here please? I'm torn between different advice on onions, should the sets be sitting half above the soil, or should the be planted completely covered. Two experts tell me different things and I'm ready to plant red onions for the first time as you will gather.
