Is parsley notoriously dificult to germinate? Ive tried everything, bought new seeds, soaked em overnight. heated propagator at 20c. Nothing at all. All other stuff I germinated was ok. Whats the deal?

Yes, parsley is notoriously difficult to germinate. I was once advised to pour boiling water along the seed drill just before you sprinkle the seed into it but I'm not sure it made a lot of difference. The best results I've had in the past came from sowing directly into the ground and just letting the seed take its time.

These days, I buy parsley plants from the supermarket and immediately split them up into bigger pots. They last pretty well for 3-4 months and then I repeat the process with new plants.

theres an old wives tale that you have to 'curse' at the seeds when you sow them

so try a bit of blue language - out of anyones earshot

I decided this year that I'd try some herbs from seed - first time I've tried as I usually buy pants and go from there.

I was in the pound shop a few days after and found pack of "Garden Herbs" which included Mint, Rosemary, Thyme, Dill, Parsley and Cress. I figured why not? If they don't work then I won't be losing any sleep over a pound.

I sew the Parsley in a mushroom tub - the plasticy ones you buy mushrooms in from supermarkets - no drainage and Aldi seed compost and sure enough the Parsley was the first to show itself in just a few days and a month on I have had to repot twice as it's growing like crazy. I sprayed twice a day with a mister bottle so the soil was moist but not wet and kept them on my kitchen windowsill which, on a sunny day, gets about 4 hours of morning sunshine. I've kept them in the same place, just upping pots when needed and now just pop in half a mug of water every few days and it's working a treat - nothing special at all.

I've started using the Parsley this week and will be back to the pound shop on Friday for another load of seeds :)

    (Everything else doing ok too!)

As I remember, the saying went "parsley seed has to go to hell and back twice before it germinates". I sow the seed on the surface of compost and then pour boiling water over the seed. That usually does the trick at getting it started. Not this time though, I sowed some by this method a few weeks ago and nothing has come up. Win some, lose some :)
