    Hello,

We've just moved house and wanted to start work on our slightly neglected garden. We are new to gardening and after some research have discovered that the very fast-growing green hairy weed that has appeared all over our flowerbeds and lawn is green alkanet. I've managed to pull up some but we can't get it out of the lawn without making massive holes. I mistakenly sprayed some grass selective weedkiller on it before knowing what it was and am now very cross to find out that it won't work on that type of weed and that I have needlessly used chemicals.

    Do you have any advice?

    Thanks

    Lisa

When you start mowing your lawn it should control/get rid of this plant. You'll have to progressively set your mower lower and lower on each cut - but then your grass will out compete it.

It is very difficult to get rid of in borders, either dig every little bit of root out or use a systemic weedkiller like Roundup (but make sure you only spray the weed as that will kill anything green!)

Well, it's a perennial and it's like the Dandelion in that if you leave any bit of root in it'll regrow.
Glyphosate is the chemical that will kill it as it's systemic and will kill the root.

thanks very much for your quick replies. i'll try mowing it and digging it up and then very selectively painting that weedkiller you mention on the leaves if any's left.
