Thank you all for the responses and suggestions, they are both "keepers" then and I need to source some car grease as protection for the first. When they have grown on a bit I'll update with some fresh photo's. Thanks again all!

That spiky thing looks to me like it could be a kniphofia or red hot poker. I've just dug up mine as I don't want them any more. They provide excellent nurseries for snails - YUK!!

And the red leaf is an acer - Acer Palmatum Atropurpureum - Japanese Red Maple

If it's a Kniphofia, it's extremely slow to develop, especially at this time of year.

Hi, Chris, sorry for being so very late in my responses, but could you tell us something about how it is all going? I have no idea how designers are chosen to do all these spectacular works of art and how they judge which project to accept and all... I'd have so many questions about it! :luv:

Perhaps if you could start a thread somewhere in the gardening projects section, say, and I really hope others are just as curious as me! :D Thanks a lot in advance!

A few more photo's of what may well be a Hosta...over to the experts for proper indentification.

    Yes, a Hosta.

You aren't expecting the actual variety name though, are you?
