We hope to be moving house soon, and I do like to "take" a little of each place when we move. At this house, we have wood anemones and wild bluebells in the garden.

When is the right time to gather the seeds from the anemones? And when to sow? (they have quite deep roots where they are growing, so not easy to lift and divide).
Would I be correct in thinking that it's best to sow the bluebell seeds as soon as they are ripe? Should I gather the seed-heads before the seeds start to rattle, keep in a paper bag, and sow when the seeds are released?

Gather the seeds of Wood anemones whilst they are still green, but when they can be gently eased from the seed head. If you leave them to go brown they often die. Sow immediately as they have a very short life span. I used to sow them in pots rather than seed trays. Cover the seed lightly and they should germinate the following Spring.
Bluebell seeds are collected when the seed head begins to split or at least that is when I did it. Again, freshly sown seed is best and it needs a period of cold before germinating in Spring.

Probably easiest to dig a few Bluebell Blubs up Sian, cant kill those things, still got them coming up in the veg patch & compost heap, 3 years after digging the plot over:DOH::parsnip:

thank you both for your help - I thought sowing the seed straight away when I harvest it was the best way forward...

I will see if I can get a bulb or two up, Ziggy, but they are in the middle of the rock-garden (of course) where it's not easy to get to.

Lovely to be part of a forum where people don't think me mad to want to take some "memories" with me, as I move from house to house! I have a rosemary bush that I will need to propogate before we move. It's a "great grand-daughter" cutting of my parents' rosemary bush from when I was a child...:)

I grew anemones for the first time last year and took seeds from the heads just as soon as they seemed ready to scatter to the four winds.
I seeded them in trays after a few days and started to germinate after a few days.
They have survived the winter in the conservatory and are now outside still in the trays awaiting to plant out somewhere.
I`m glad I did gather, as this year I only have 2/3 anemones growing. I`m guessing they took a hit from the cold winter.
Maybe a good idea to dig up the bulbs over winter.

Sian thanks so much for this thread, I was searching boards this morning for help around bluebells and happened on this one while looking for help on something totally different lol

I moved into this house just before Christmas 2010 and have got a lot of wild bluebells come up in the front and back garden. I want to save the ones from the front garden, just move em elsewhere and don't know when to dig up or even the seeding process I have read about on here so any help/advice gratefully received.

    Happy Easter Days
