    Hi All,

I'm new to this forum and have tried searching but couldn't find anything similar....

So I recently moved into a house from a flat and went gardening crazy. I planted 3 canna lily bulbs in early march and believed I left a big space in the middle. I went to plant a shrub today between them but couldn't remember exactly how far apart the canna's were...

I tried to carefully scratch the surface (like an archaeologist!) to see if the canna's were nearby... In my attempts to see where the gap was I have managed to knock the tips off 2 of the new canna shoots. There was another shot on one of the bulbs but now I worry I have killed the bulbs for this year...

Is the damage terminal? Or is there hope they may survive? I didn't knock the entire shoots off just the tips. Very disappointed with myself lol! I can buy new ones if I've likely killed them. Oh the pain!

    Thank you all in advance!

    Chase

Hi They should be ok the should resprout but I woudnt plant a shrub in the middle as when the canna get going they will probably shade out with the huge leaves depending on the variety they can grow to over 6 feet do you know which variety you have got ? , I always think Canna look best in a group what shrub have you put in ?? the middle of them.
Dont feel bad Iam sure we have all dug up bulbs etc I know I have

I don;t know much about Canna, growing them for the first year this year - but is there any risk to them if we get late frosts? Would hate you to lose them! If not I'll plant mine out now instead of them becoming monstrous in their pots:)

Ahhhh thanks guys all your advice is helpful.

Wiseoldowl - that thread on canna's is really interesting. I feel like I know my potential new plants a little bit better now :) Thank you!

Spruce - it is a Canna Wyoming. I have learned a valuable lesson now... fortunately I abandoned the idea of putting a shrub there as I didn't want to cause any more damage so it is a canna only area now. I honestly didnt realise they got so tall... my sunflowers might have some vertical competition then eh?

I feel much better now guys. I seem to get more nervous with the pretty things... give me a sturdy bush and I'm far from precious :)

I think its the joy of no longer living in a flat... I clearly got carried away with the bulbs this year lol. Thanks again guys!:sunny::thumbsup:

I think Spruce is right, the Cannas should re-sprout again and if the original shoots aren't too badly damaged they may carry on growing even with the setback.

I've got 19 Canna's in large pots now, with some in the Greenhouse and some in the kitchen just to keep them away from any possible frosts. I did think about putting them in the soil but decided to have them in pots so I could move them around to different spots for different effects. I'm like Kristen, in that this is my first year of having a serious focus on Canna's, we shall see what we shall see!:happydance:

I'd just like to add that if you want flowers reasonably early its best to get them going in a greenhouse in pots first.
They can take quite a while getting to flowering size if planted directly into cold soil, and its still relativity cold right now.

Yes, you're right, Pete. That's another reason why some of the Cannas are in the Greenhouse and some in the Kitchen.:D
