I am a beginner gardener trying my best but get really lost.

I have been out today fighting a loosing battle with weeds - clover, grass and ones that look like cabbages mostly. I am uploading 2 pictures of growing things I need identified as I don't know if they are weeds. The first one is just a mass of leaves but the second one has buds at the top like it's about to flower. If anyone can help with identification, I would appreciate it very much.

I am also uploading a picture of a buddleia plant I got last year. I have labelled it as number 3. It's a dwarf type so it doesnt take over. Can anyone tell me if I should cut it back, is it too late to cut it back and if I dont cut it back will it still flower this year?

Thank you so much for any help and guidance.

    Hi
First picrure on the left looks like clover (nice big one ) picture on the right is a perenial plant , its got a couple of names ( Granny's Bonnets) aquliega or columbine ,,, the lsat word has somting to do with dove ?? I think dont know why though) and I would keep that the spike that it is producing is a flower so not long to wait

And yes you can trim and pinch out the growing tips of your buddleia its not to late as it flowere on the new growth it produces this year

    All yours

    Spruce

First one looks like a very well fed clover - weed..

The second an Aquilegia, a lovely perennial and wil self seed..

The third - your dwarf buddleia; I would leave it this year now and only prune at the end of next winter just as the new buds start growing (Feb-early March)

Remember though a weed is only a plant in the wrong place, if you like the clover - keep it...there are no hard and fast rules....except for bindweed and and groundelder (they must go if you get them).

Clover is not a weed if you have hens or guinea pigs - it's valuable green foodstuff. But I only encourage it in 'set aside' areas on my plot (as it's also a nitrogen fixer), and not amongst my flowers/veg.

 Well the first one could be a very healthy clover, or I am wondering if it one of the Oxalis family.. Do you know if it had yellow flowers last year.? If it did it could be Oxalis tuberosa
    2nd.Aquilegia defo as everyone says..

I agree with Spruce, you could just tip prune your Buddleia now & still get your flowers..

Wow thank you all so much you are great !

I've never seen clover so big - the rest of my garden patch has clover in it but its right down at ground level and a hard to get rid of. As soon as I get it up, theres more somewhere else. I honestly don't know if I put in Oxalis last year. I dont remember that big clover looking thing growing last year. Perhaps I should leave it and see if it flowers?

Now how do I trim and pinch out the buddleia and if I do that will it definately flower this year? It was really nice last year.

I know it's worth the work in the end when I can see all my plants happy and flowering but whoever said gardening is relaxing I think was lying - its backbreaking. Even sitting on the ground I am aching all over. I feel like I am 90 years old ha ha

      Hi
How to describe??? I will try, the realy long branches just nip out the growing tip so the others have time to catch up and this will help produce side shoots and give it a nice even shape , from your photo you can do all of that in 5 minutes so any longer and you are taking to much off

Have a relax sound if you need it
