Gosh, that place looks absolutely fascinating - I wish I lived nearer as I would love to see it. Imagine it being neglected for that length of time, that must be longer than the lost gardens of Helligan (which don't have a fab castle).

We too went to the shows at Lowther as our friend (now sadly deceased) was the sound man for the shows. Actually met Prince Philip many years ago and was invited to a BBQ at 'his' caravan just down from 'ours' .. yes, he actually stayed in a caravan there! Very relaxed and genuine man.

It's good that Lowther Estate are doing this but four years ago they angered a lot of locals and even more visitors when they took back White Moss Car Park from the National Trust. The NT had been leasing it for donkeys years therefore members were allowed to park free.

A lot of locals are members of the NT and used it as a base for walking and, more importantly, for mums taking their young children to the park by the river. Now it is too expensive for them to do this.

They also left the same pay and display machines there so it looked as though it was still NT. They put up a small notice to the effect that it was no longer NT but took it down after only a couple of months. This meant that a number of people who didn't realise it had changed got a fine for parking without paying.

They have done the same with the Silverthwaite car park by Skelwith Bridge.

Fortunately I was told about this by people that live close to both car parks so wasn't caught out. I tried notifying all the people that I used to take walking there but I'm sure I must have missed some of them. :cry3:

Shiney we parked in White Moss car park two years ago when we wanted to walk in that area and nearly got caught out,but luckily I saw the notice just as we were leaving the car park so decided to go and find another car park instead {NT}so never got to do that walk in the end.:D There was definetley a notice up though warning NT members not to park there:yess:

Mr Kandy doesn't think we have parked in the car park at Skelwith Bridge so didn't know about that one,Thanks
