I purchased an asparagus plant last year at one of those bazaar type shops (99p) and planted. It sent up some green shoots which I did not pick or cut as per instructions on the package.
This year the the shoots have appeared for the second time and again leaving and not harvesting as per instructions.

But look at the size of the plant, it is approaching 4 feet in height and its only April.

Do you know what is going on?

It's just growing as it should. Just support it to prevent any wind rock damage to the root system. Next year you'll be able to enjoy your first picking.

Thanks Dave for your prompt reply. Next year when I take the crop I assume I cut at around the 12" stalk length, I dont want 4 feet lengths

I've not grown them in containers, but I'm not convinced that that container will be big enough?

Asparagus have massive root systems (and need to in order to have enough energy to support the spears being harvested).

Hopefully someone who grows them in containers will be along with advice shortly :thumb:

You cut the shoots young (just below the surface) at about 6 inches long or so
You are going to find it difficult to get enough shoots available at one time to get a good dinner though :)
