I just wondered if this is normal...

My hubby put in his garlics at the right depth, but I have noticed that they are starting to sit slightly proud as they grow. They are about 4 or 5 inches and you can see the 'shoulders' of the bulb.

Is this right? Or do we need to scatter with compost?

    (see previous post ) http://www.gardenerscorner.co.uk/forum/am-too-late-plant-garlici-t25933.html

As to your question Im afraid I have no idea. Mine have shoots 4 or 5 inches tall now, but I cannot see the 'shoulders' of the bulb as you describe. I guess they grow a bit like onions where the shoulders do eventually show above the ground, but Im really not sure as its my first year growing them :dh:

    Good luck to us eh?

Thanks Blueroses... maybe I'll scatter some compost around them a bit!

    Good luck with yours!

I think you shouldn't be able to see the shoulders, maybe they are too shallow (should have been planted and inch or so below the surface). Heaping some compost over them sounds like a good idea :thumb:

I think it'll be fine. The cloves do tend to get pushed out by root growth sometimes and it doesn't (in my vast experience of 2 years growing garlic!) seem to adversely affect them.
