Many years ago my Hubby planted two Pampas Grasses in our front lawn. These have now grown to a ridiculous size and the centres are dying out - leaving plants which are a real mess.
I want to take them out and replace them with two new black Pampas. The problem is how do I kill the old ones? A neighbour told me to set fire to them a few years ago. I did and they got bigger!
    Any ideas?
Please don't suggest digging them up - they are 8ft across and just as high!
    Chris.

    1) Cut them down completely to ground level and spray them with Touchdown or other Glyphospate product. You'll have to spray them a couple of times. When you keep mowing that area, any remmants will eventually die out.

    or 2) Hire a mini-digger.

Even if you manage to kill them you will need to get them out . Not easy, I'm afraid.

If hauling them out or getting a digger in to do it aren't options then you need to resort to a couple of hefty men hand digging. You will then need to fill the hole with soil.

Or ... invest in a mattock. Great exercise and perfect for digging and cutting through roots. A marvellous tool.

You really HAVE to dig them out I'm afraid, either by hand or using a digger etc
I had one of similar size which I dug out after cutting down to ground level. The digging out of the rootball was done a bit at a time by splitting with a heavy axe into sizeable clumps :)
Better than going to the gym :)
