Checked on my plants this morning, and somehow a stupid slug must have gotten into the greenhouse. :( I'm not pleased. It's eaten 3 tomato seedlings.

I'm not keen on the slimy little things myself, so I've sent my other half hunting for it. I'm feeling rather murderous towards it if he finds it.

I presume it must have got in on one of the plants that had been outside for the day because surely they can't climb up metal shelving can they?

Any ideas about how to stop them again. Not keen on slug pellets because of the kids (and the cats that visit our garden).

You can try sand or very fine gravel round the bases of the pots.
Slugs don't like copper, so if you can get hold of copper rings to put round the base that should keep them at bay. :)

How about a little drink of lager or beer while they are sunning them selves in your green house with tomato relish for lunch , joking aside put a dish of larger or beer that will soon catch them

First of all, sorry to hear you have the problem that bugs all of us at some time or another.

Slugs, but especially snails, can climb almost anything. It is quite possible it was a snail.

The non-metaldehyde slug pellets are not harmful to wildlife (check the label) and Which? have just done research into their effectiveness. Apparently there is little difference between the two apart from price.

Slug pubs are quite effective and you can either use a shallow bowl, make something yourself or buy very reasonably priced slug pubs. They come with lids so that the dogs, cats and birds don't get drunk.

Don't put slug pubs in the greenhouse but put them just outside the nearest access points. You don't want to attract them into the greenhouse - you want them outside.

If usuing pellets don't put them in the pot with the plant - same reason. Sprinkle them, sparingly, around the pots or trays and with a bit of luck the pellet will get them before they climb up.

If taking the sprinkling sand or gravel route you can also use ash - either housefire or bonfire.

    Good luck

They are normally the culprits for this type of damage in my greenhouse. Have a look underneath seed trays, staging slats, etc., and if re-using slightly damaged modular cell trays they can get between them and the seed tray supporting them.

I had eggs hatch in a flower pot on the window sill followed by a plague of little sluglets.

I haven't seen a slug or snail so far this season, but I've put that down to this dry weather and my sandy soil.:hapfeet: Something is out of kilter here:scratch:

I live in Manchester. It rains a lot. :) We have a lot of slugs and snails!

I'm going to do the slug pub thing, but the idea of dead drowned slimy things makes me shudder a bit. I think DH will have to deal with them.

Just checked my slug pellets made by Bayer and their "Bio" brand , this contain 3% metaldehyde ! It seems to do a good job but as we have dogs and grandchildren ,which are the best brands which do not contain this chemical ?

I think you need to look on the containers to see which are harmless to wildlife and pets. They should state it quite clearly. :thumb:

Tried to do the slug pub last night. But my other half said that no way on earth were the bl@@dy slugs having his Hobgoblin ale! :heehee: I think they'll have to wait until I can get some Morrisons stuff. I'm sure they won't really know the difference!

    Hi Rachel
You cannot give slugs Hobgoblin or Speckled Hen :love30:or any premium beer , that would be sacrilege . The cheapo Morrisons brand will be fine . I am going to try my slug pubs again this year , not had to much luck with them last couple of years.
Also don't use any beer that has been brewed down south , even slugs and snails won't drink that stuff ! :heehee::heehee::heehee:

PS: I know speckled hen is made in Suffolk
    :D
