I Never Knew, until today the number of accidents caused by Deer on the roads of Central Scotland at this time of year. The Authorities say there are around 10,000 incidents/accidents
with young deer running across roads and motorways ..

living in the highlands we have a far bigger deer problem than central scotland all year round not just at this time, and i think you`ll find its drivers who cause the accidents with deer not the deer who cause the accidents

While I do have some sympathy with that view (and with the deer), it's pretty tough on a driver when a roe deer jumps over a hedge and onto the road right in front of one's car. It can be a very dear experience.

The Central Scotland and Highlands are rather different in that roe deer and roadside hedges and woodland are fairly common in Central Scotland while in the Highlands (we once lived there) the verges tend to be much wider and clearer - though the deer and final crunch tend to be bigger!

Amazing - 10,000 seems an excessively high amount of accidents. I often see those deer warning signs along country roads or even motorways in England, but I've never actually seen a deer on the road, although it must happen otherwise they wouldn't have the signs.......would they?

Very slightly different situation, but Volvo and Saab (both originally Swedish companies where Elks can be a problem), both include the 'Elk test' when testing a new design of car before it gets mass produced.

The test involves placing the test car at one end of a track, and a wooden elk at the other, then towing the car into the elk at about 50mph. Crash test dummies monitor the impact forces. If any of the vehicle occupants would have been killed, its back to the drawing board for the car.

They do this because the founder of Volvo or Saab cars (Volvo the company predates their car making days considerably), was killed the car he was driving hitting an elk, which came through the windscreen and crushed him.

Apparently Volvo and Saab still do this test, partly out of company tradition, and partly because elks are a real problem on the roads of Sweden.
