I have a beautiful big hydrangea which has been growing in heavy clay soil for 15 years. I now have a very large dandelion growing right in the middle of it. Can anyone advise me how to get rid of the dandelion please.

    Thanks

    Marie

Good evening Marie and welcome to the site. As the Hydrangea is a woody plant, I would be inclined to spray the Dandelion with a Glyphosate weedkiller. Just don`t get it on any Hydrangea leaves though.:dbgrtmb:

[IMG] Marie, I think I would do what Dai has said.. Just be very careful not to get any on the leaves of your hydrangea.. If you are worried about that then if you can get some on a paintbrush & brush it all over the Dandelion leaves & then leave it for a few weeks.. If it is a really big strong one & it comes back dose it again...

I would definitely go with Marley's advice about using an artists paint brush dipped in weedkiller to paint the leaves of the Dandelion. I use that method all the time on my herbaceous borders where I have to be careful not to touch any other plants. I wouldn't use
use a spray as there is too much risk of mist drift from the atomised weed killer.:cry3:

I don't know whether they still make Murphy's Tumbleweed Gel but if they don't I'm sure someone makes something similar. It was a weedkiller gel that came in a small tub that had a brush attached inside the lid.

Ask at a good garden centre.

I hadn't thought of the fact the hydrangea is a woody plant and I will definitely try the glyphosate, but not today as it is very windy. Thanks for the quick reply.

By the way, I am not an apprentice gardener as it says. I don't know how that got there or how to change it.

When I lived in Australia we could buy a weedkiller in a bottle which had a wick (similar to Airwick) so that individual weeds could be touched without affecting anything else. You could even buy an extension handle for it to save bending. Haven't seen it here though.

          Thanks

Can you tell me how to change my description from "apprentice" to "keen" gardener please. Been gardening in Australia for many years but some things are a bit different here - the weather for one.

          Thanks

          Marie

          Hi Marie

The name doesn't mean anything. The site automatically allocates a title depending on how many posts you make.

          Hi Marie,

Bang a copper nail in the dandelion root.

Unfortunately, Shiney, all the Tumble range of products were banned about 15 years ago, along with Touchweeders.:gaagh::dbgrtmb:

Yeah, I miss those weed wipe things you used to get! If I am weeding deep rooted perennials such as dandelions or weeds with running roots such as couch grass and horsetail, I spray a bit onto a plastic glove and then 'stroke to death' the offending weeds.

So If I had some (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) I wouldn't be able to use it or sell it :mute: :heehee:
