Know Your Weeds

At this time of year our ever faithful friends the weeds are sprouting like.............well , like weeds :D So that you don't pull up your favourite perennials the link below shows most of the major weeds you may find. It is divided into 5 categories to help LOW ROSETTES LOWCLUMPS UPRIGHTSTEMS SCRAMBLERS GRASSLIKE

I had marked all the bare root perennials I planted with colour coded plant labels , and recorded the names and colours on my Excel garden log. Evie our 2 year old grand daughter thought that collecting them all and making them into a pretty circle was a far better use for the coloured labels:gaagh:

How timely!

Im trying to ID some weeds. I think No.2 is alkanet?
But Im not sure the other two are on that list. Actually should this whole thread be in the ID area?

 

No.2 could be a young foxglove and No.4 looks like a young "pussy" willow sapling, we get them popping up all the time...
Don't know what No.3 is but it looks quite attractive??

 

I know right?! I actually like number 3! It gets to maybe 3 feet and has lovely purple and blue spires. I dont let it set seed though.

People have told me it was a weed. But its pretty!

 

I'm also interested to know what number 3 is, I have this in my garden but really like it, its really pretty when it flower so I encourage it.

 

Just read your post harryS, very good . I have a weed in a couple of old planters ..I now know it is Liverwort.

 

It looks like purple stemmed Euphorbia.

I knew what #3 was 20 years ago, but that was a long time of substance abuse ago:DOH:

I think it was some type of Toadflax. I remember it had reproductive problems, 2 stems growing from a single plant, looked like Siamese twins, got worrried it was caused by Chernobyl

You're absolutely right on number 3, Purple Toadflax, I should get my head away from nappies and back in the garden for a bit

Nearly called Daughter #1 Toadflax, as it was growing outside the hospital when she was born. Poppy suited her better though.
