Well our local weather station is showing 3 degrees here at 7.10am; we have a little ice on the top of the car and the neighbouring field has frost on it but luckily our back garden, which is several feet higher, has no frost.

we had a frost here last night, but my runner beans were tucked up under their bed-sheets, so hopefully they'll be ok. Most of the seedlings and young plants were brought in (but I forgot one tray - too scared to look!). It's amazing how many old sheets etc you can find when you need to!

We had frost last night - lawn still is a bit white.

I was out at 6 a.m. to water the runner beans that Mrs shiney put in the other day. It's an old gardening tradition to water off any light frost before the sun gets to the non-hardy plants. It appears to have worked.

Good morning - here in my deepest, darkest part of the Weald of Kent, my neighbour was heard scraping his windscreen, I looked out and all those cars (which they can't be bothered to put in their perfectly adequate garages) were white.

I've just done a 'tour of inspection' and everything is fine, my neighbour is 'surprised' we've had a frost ..... but it's only 4th May, why should he be surprised?

And to think last week-end when I visited the garden centre and the sun was shining, I looked at all the plants 'they' were buying and thought, 'Tempting ... but too early' - still, good news for the garden centre no doubt :yay:

Oh no! Caught totally off guard here in Hertford.

I've got a load of seedlings & seed trays that haven't yet germinated in one of those tall plastic zip-up grow houses which has (apparently, according to a v cheap thermometer) been getting up to 40-50 degrees in the day and last night frosted up inside. Poor little tiny sunflower seedlings were all frosty this morning! Didn't help that I watered everything the night before.

Clearly I'm not doing a good job either way. They're supposed to be at around 20-25 degrees. Think I've killed them all with the furnace / frost combo?

Must start looking at the weather forecast. On the plus side, I did move some cuttings into out newly-built greenhouse just a day ago, so hopefully they're less doomed.

I covered my cucumbers late last night, but no frost. The surrounding sea keeps us warmer here. :)

    Hi,
last year I put bedders out too early and covered them with bubble wrap but didn't stop the verbena getting burned.
    would fleece be better?
Thinking of starting baskets this weekend but garaging them each night (or just frosty nights? )

    Cheers
    David

Mrs shiney filled 15 baskets three weeks ago and we keep them in the carport. They are all doing well  but won't be hung up for another two weeks yet.

Weather is predicted to be warm for the next week - 7C min at night I think. Might get a frost after that, but if you would be able to bring them back in it might be worth putting them out to start enjoying them? So long as the plants aren't small such that they might be bothered by any wind-drying

    Thanks Kristen,
The plants are fairly large for the time of year and many of them are in bloom. The carport has a clear plastic roof so they get plenty of light, stay fairly warm but get virtually no direct sunlight. They are all orders for people that will be along on Open Day.
