Hi, i'm growing some chillis ( first time), and i've moved them to a south facing window sill, so they get sun from sun up to about 2/3 pm, however

The look very spindly to me.

They all ( 4 plants ) have four strong leaves, but the stalks are very thin, they are about 1 1/2- 2 inches tall.

Is this normal and am i just worried as all new gardeners do.

    thanks in adavance.

So are these new seedlings you have grown? If so it all depends when you sowed them - a photo would help

    Hi esdel,
Mine sound just like yours. I've never grown them before either.
I've put them in 4"pots so they have room and put them in unheated greenhouse.
    Think my seeds were Carters.
    Time will tell I suppose.

Pic would definitely help but as they're getting more and more light at this time of year they should bulk up a bit. Plant them deeper(ie bury some of the stalk) when you pot them on and (don't laugh) stroke the leaves or brush your hand gently over the tp. It makes the main stem bulk up as the plant thinks its getting windy.

    Nice tip andy.
If you stroke it it grows and stiffens.
    Hmmm...

The'll fruit better undercover but do tend to get infested with aphids, been putting ladybirds on mine.

Had 2 chillies off it last week, the third is turning red & loads more flowers have come in the past week. Been feeding it with homemade seaweed feed & have just repotted it.

Sweet Peppers have just set a few fruits too.

    Hi Esdel
you will find the plants will thicken up as they get older. The amount of sun a Chili receives is critical , mine are on a south facing window getting sun for 12 hours . The one I took into the office does not receive as much sun , and it is about 1 month behind in growth. This link below is a pretty good comprehensive guide to growing chillies. Note that when you grow them inside you need to pollinate them with a paintbrush , apparently between 12 midday and 3 pm , when the pollen ripens !

Yours are coming on fine:thumbsup: Not leggy at all so all is well.

Mine are second year plants, cut back & overwintered in the window sill.

Still haven't got the hang of pruning so they bush up nicely though, there were some lovely ones at the Melplash Show last year, looked like topiary:DOH:
