Evergreen tree - NOT conifer

    A friend has asked for a suggestion for an evergreen tree but NOT a conifer. I immediately thought of evergreen Oak but I'm sure the esteemed company will have other ideas, so over to you!

    Winter Strawberry Tree?

    There is one in my neighbour's garden - lovely lookng tree, imho.

    Ooh well I have a few favourites Chris..

    Ligustrum lucidum - Chinese Cloud tree..

    Nothofagus dombeyi - Dombeys Southern Beech..

    Daphniphyllum macropodum - False Daphne..

    Elaeagnus ebbingei - Elaeagnus.. (more oftrn used in hedging but also superb architectural trees)

    Several holly varieties will also grow to tree like proportions...

    There are some nice "conifers" too - just before they are written off! I agree the normal ones don't look very nice, but Cedar? Juniper? I think they are nice. Or even a Yew.

    What sort of problem is your friend trying to solve by planting an evergreen tree? ("Evergreen tree that is not a conifer" is clear! but it might help to know why the tree is needed, how much space is available, how quickly (or not) it needs to grow, type of soil, and so on)
