Major help needed!

Hi All!

Im new to this forum and very new to gardening, where to start...

Our rear lawn is very uneven, after some dog sized holes being dug that now resemble the surface of the moon in places lol!

its also not flat in any places at all and has various slants.

My question is what do i do! do i try and patch it? turn it all over and attempt to level it (rotovator im guessing?) then cover with grass seed ot possibly turf? i really dont know!

the lawn is about 30ft x 20ft at a guess..

I think you are running too late into the year for creating a new lawn by seed. Turfing might be a better option but will need to be watered every couple of days until established.

What I would do is give the grass a feed, liquid would be my preference but use granular but you need a machine to apply it - borrow one if you can. Measure out how much you need for the lawn area, set the machine on a lower setting than recommended and keep going round until it used up. Water in if no rain for two days.

Cut the grass after about a week but on highest setting and cut each week gradually reducing the setting. Dont go too low.

Holes do later as the feed and weed will not do new grass any good in the first few months.

Around the clothes whirly I would put down slabs as this area needs to be walked on in all weather. Dig out, save the soil, and follow instructions from leaflets in DIY shops

apologies for the real late reply...

the problem is there are lots of holes and even mounds, so i want to start form scratch basically.

what i plan to do is the following, can anyone advise if this will be a bad idea or if im likely to run into problems?

give the lawn a good spraying with roundup to kill any weeds or cooch grass;
rotovate the whole thing and rake so its nice and even and flat (hopefully);
roll the whole lawn so its firm and flattened;
lay new turf on nice flat surface and water thoroughly for several weeks!

good or bad idea??!!

Would be careful not to overdo the rolling. Raking or luting the soil can get it level. A roller wont level it, it will make any hollows you have more prononced and if overdone will cause compaction which restricts the root growth. A roller should only be lightly used to consolidate the surface.

is it ok to rotovate the ground with the grass still on top or should it be cut off?
