Apologies for the flood of questions. As many new gardeners have done in the past I have fallen into the trap of buying planting then sitting back and thinking 'That wasn't wise'

Two weeks ago I bought and planted this (see pic) Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Ellwoodii'

I planted it without thinking too much about the size and proximity to the house. As it is it is only about 2 ft from the corner. Can I dig it up and move it out so that it is 3 - 4 ft from the corner without harming the tree. It has only been in there about 2 weeks.

No problem at all, it won't have spread its roots much. Water well before and after and dig it up in as big a ball as possible (retaining as much soil around the root ball)

I'd move it further away than just 3-4 feet.

Getting further than 4ft would be a problem HarmonyArb! I am aware that it will eventually be quite big (25m) and about 2.5m diameter but this will take a while. When I bought it the guy said that I would be drawing my pension before it got taller than me (about 15 years away) and it will be more like 25 - 30 to get to its mature size. By which time we will have either moved house or I will have moved on from this life!

Littleweed, it's not so much the height and spread you have to worry about, but the root spread. I would never consider planting any conifer closer than 25ft to my house.

The roots cause so much damage. My drains just ten foot from my neighbours conifer hedge are having to be replaced for the second time in six years because of the damage from the roots.

Having said that, my neighbour is removing the hedge later in the summer. I'm relieved. :yess:

Ah ... OMG! OK I better rethink the conifer then. God knows where it is going to go. Thanks.
