If anyone could identify this I would be very grateful and could spend more time in the garden and less searching the net!

It flowers in late August with small red flowers.

    Thank you!

    Ant.

Sorry dai, but that is not entirely correct.

Crocosmia Lucifer is a very old cultivar.
But with plant breeding there are now several named cultivars of Crocosmia that are red.
Have a look at this site where they have 4 whole pages, just of Crocosmia. They sell several red ones.

Just before we get to secateurs at dawn (:heehee:) - can I just butt in and say I have Crocosmia 'Lucifer', Crocosmia 'Carmine Brilliant', Crocosmia 'Emberglow' and Crocosmia 'Emily McKenzie' (although I grant you, Emily McKenzie is an orangey red), but they've all been bought within the last 3 years - first 3 from Homebase, the third from my local B&Q.

Whether its lucifer or not, I've yet to see a crocosmia that isn't stunning. When in bloom, they can make an average British day feel like your on the mediterranean coast.

I agree. What's more, they appear to be the 'almost perfect' plant, mine have been frozen solid, scorched, drowned and parched all in equal measure, and every year back they come. They don't worry about being fed, shrug off cold wind, tolerate sun or shade and slowly spread themselves without being invasive, I've used them to add 'zing' to cut flower arrangements and even managed to dry a few. The only thing mine seem to lack is a perfume.
